V\u00e9zelay to the Spanish border at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. It crosses France diagonally over nearly 900 kilometers.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"fr-FR\">The Codex Calixtinus is a 12th century work. <\/span> <span lang=\"fr-FR\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">It describes the four French routes to Compostela. Its author is unknown! Is it the Poitevin monk, Aimery Picaud or Hugues le Poitevin, monk of V\u00e9zelay? In general, the writing is attributed to the first one!<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"fr-FR\">According to this book, three saints are to be venerated along the way:<\/span> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"fr-FR\">Saint Mary Magdalene in V\u00e9zelay,<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"fr-FR\">Saint L\u00e9onard in Noblat,<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"fr-FR\">Saint Front in P\u00e9rigueux.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Way of V\u00e9zelay benefits from a considerable historical heritage which comes from V\u00e9zelay, the eternal hill where the first crusades were preached, and from the exceptional influence throughout Europe of the cult of Saint-Leonard. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>The year 2000 saw the publication of a pilgrim&#8217;s itinerary for Saint-Jacques on the V\u00e9zelay Historic Way <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\">\u00ae<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/vezelay-compostelle.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hommage-a-Monique-Chassain.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Chassain guide known as &#8220;yellow guide&#8221;)<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span lang=\"fr-FR\">From V\u00e9zelay, two possibilities are offered to the pilgrim: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"fr-FR\">either follow the <strong>northern<\/strong> branch passing through <strong>Bourges<\/strong> and its cathedral with its numerous stained glass windows representing Saint Jacques<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"fr-FR\">or follow the <strong>southern branch<\/strong> passing through <strong>Nevers<\/strong> and its cathedral with the presence of a statue of Saint Jacques.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span lang=\"fr-FR\">The two paths meet in Gargilesse in the Indre, land of painters and George Sand.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p>The landscapes are always admirable, whether it is the plain of Ch\u00e2teauroux or the hills and woods of Morvan. The architecture is varied and some buildings are classified as World Heritage by <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/fr\/list\/84\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO<\/a>.
